How to fix Windows Network Proxy settings problems

Sometimes you see a yellow exclamation point icon next to the icon for connecting to your network. The operating system offers you to solve the problem, but when you do it, you will encounter this message: “Windows could not automatically detect this network’s proxy settings.” What does this error message mean and how can you fix it? In this article, we will discuss the Windows proxy settings and the solution to this problem.

1. Reboot your computer and router

Always try to reinstall your computer before using advanced methods. This may solve your problem within minutes. This error is usually related to incorrect configuration settings on the computer, and the router’s restart may not solve the problem. But anyway, it’s better to try this way first. If the computer and router’s reboot did not resolve the problem, read the rest of the article.

2. Review the proxy settings in Windows

Because this problem is related to the Windows proxy settings, check this location. To access the proxy settings in Windows 10, open the settings and go to the Network & Internet section and open the proxy tab on the left side of the sidebar.

Here you will find a list of options related to proxy servers. If you are not using a proxy, the Use a proxy server slider should be off. Turn on the Automatically detect settings option. Proxy users (for example, those in a work or educational environment) are better off talking to the administrator first to ensure that proxy details are correct. Then try connecting again. If you still receive an error message, turn off the Automatically detect settings option in the proxy settings and try again.

What is a proxy server?

We do not want to bother you in detail, but we need to give a brief explanation about the proxy and why Windows is having trouble with it.

Basically, a proxy acts like a middle man between the computer and the Internet. Instead of connecting directly to the Internet, you connect to a server that downloads and provides information from the Internet.

Proxies are most commonly used in universities and corporations, which administrators use for efficiency and security. It is unlikely that you will use a proxy server at home unless you set it yourself. For this reason, if you are at home, you should completely disable the proxy settings.

3. Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter

When you click on the network connection icon and run the Internet Connections troubleshooter, you may see the “Windows can not detect proxy settings” error message, but you can use a different Trouble shooter that is likely to help. Will give you more.

Open the settings again and go to Update & Security >Troubleshoot. Find the Network Adapter and find the troubleshooter. Perhaps this tool does not solve your problem but it’s worth the try.

4. Get the IP address and DNS automatically

While this method does not have much to do with proxy settings, the DNS settings and the wrong IP address can also trigger an error message. Go to Settings> Network & Internet> Status to make sure they are not in trouble. Click the Change adapter options button in the list to see the network connections. Then double click on the item you are using.

Select Properties and double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 in the list. Both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically must be selected. False settings can cause you to not be online.

5. Update your network driver or restore it to the previous version

Update network driver windows pc

A network driver that can not be upgraded can cause problems. Similarly, you may have installed an update to troubleshoot your network driver. Anyway, replacing it can solve the problem. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand the Network adapters section and double click on your connection.

On the Driver tab, select the Roll Back Driver option to return the last update to the uninstall. If you encounter a problem after the update, use this option. Select Update Driver to check for updates on the Internet. Of course, you may not find this item and you will have to download the latest version of the driver from your computer manufacturer’s site.

6. Reset the network configuration using the command line

Windows has a lot of ways to fix the problem through the command line. A series of quick commands can fix your problem in a few minutes. To do this, right-click on the menu and select a Command Prompt (or PowerShell) as an admin. Then run the following commands one by one. These commands reset many network functions on your computer:

etsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /flushdns

7. Check your anti-virus software, firewall and VPN

Make sure that a firewall, antivirus, or VPN does not interfere with your network connection. Perhaps your chosen software or something you have just installed has an update that has changed the settings. Disable your firewall, antivirus, and VPN and see if the problem is resolved. If the problem is resolved, it’s because of one of these apps. You should check the configuration to prevent another network malfunctioning problem.

8. Scan your device

Some malware keep interacting with proxy settings to keep you online. If you ever see your device rebooted, you might be victimized by the message “Windows could not detect this network’s proxy settings.

You should scan your device with an anti-malware application, such as Malwarebytes. With this software, all malware and system viruses are detected and deleted. Then see if the problem is resolved.

9. Use a System Restore

windows system restore settings

The System Restore feature returns your computer to a time that has no problem. If you have recently encountered a problem, you can use this method. In the Start menu, find and open Control Panel. If Category is selected at the top right, select Small or Large icons, and then select System input.

Then click on System Protection in the left sidebar. In the box that opens, click System Restore to open a new window. In this section you can find a restore point. Of course, if your computer does not have any recursive point, you can not use this feature.

Keep in mind that the use of the restoration point eliminates any program or driver installed after the specified time. You can click on Scan for affected programs on the screensaver to see which programs will be deleted. The restoration system will not affect your personal information.

10. Restore your network settings

If you have tried all of the above and did not respond, reset your network settings completely. If no other solution is answered, resetting the network settings should eliminate any problems that are in the way. Fortunately, the whole rest of the configuration in Windows 10 is a simple task. Open Settings> Network & Internet. In the Status tab, click Network Reset at the bottom and click on it.

Be careful, because this will remove all network information from your computer, as a result, you have to re-enter the information. If you have trouble with this, click Reset now. Your computer will reset and restart your device.
